Basic K9 Handler training

Scenturion K9 Consulting is honored to receive consideration for the contract training of your detection dog. We have a program that will meet your high standards and unique needs. As you well know there is more to narcotic detection dogs than training the dogs how to search for and locate specific odors. Scenturion K9 places most of its “training” focus on the handler.

The following are just some of the areas Scenturion K9 will cover:

Dog care, behavior and basic training techniques. Identifying problems and small health issues before they become more serious. Communication between you and your dog is the most important factor in training. The goal will be to get your dog to work on a loose leash and with one command.

Narcotics recognition. Each of the main four street narcotics including: Marijuana, Methamphetamine, Cocaine, Heroin and each of their derivatives. The dangers and make up of these substances and how to recognize them.

Decision making techniques. The handler will need to learn how to make well thought-out decisions and what resources to use in each situation.

Search planning. Whether conducting a productive search or a reactive search, the handler will need to know how to plan an effective search.

Safety. Handlers will be taught when and how to safely deploy their k9 partner in different circumstances and environments.

The Dogs

The selection of the dog is another key component to the success of each Detection team. Scenturion K9 has a comprehensive test that each dog must pass before it is considered as a candidate. One of the necessary traits we believe is extremely important is that of sociability. Considering the fact that the dogs will be working in close proximity to schools and many people this is a must. Dogs may be of several different type breeds including: Labrador retrievers, German Shepard’s, Belgian Malinois or Dutch Shepard’s. Dogs are obtained by several different methods. Some may be bought from breeders or private homes or obtained from “service” organizations such as “guide dogs or disability” type organizations. The costs will vary based upon how and where the dogs are purchased or obtained and range from $500.00 to $5,500.00. (Detection only dogs, with no bite training are less expensive).

All dogs come with guarantees for good health, temperament and working traits. If at anytime within the first 2 years a dog develops any problems (other than injuries), we will find a replacement dog for no additional costs and within a reasonable amount of time. After the first two years we will consider the problem individually and determine the best resolution for both West Covina Police Department and Scenturion K9.

Detection Odors for Narcotics:

Marijuana Methamphetamine Cocaine Heroin

As you are aware, these are the primary base odors for narcotics. However there are many combinations of the above odors the handler will need to be aware of and will need to train for detection by the dog. Derivatives would include MJ residue, sticky and thick in the bowl of a pipe, as well as hashish. The handler and dog will need to be aware there may be a product with one name that can be made up of one base odor or more concentrated odor, such as crack and ice.

Training Program:

The training program can be tailored to your Departments needs and the handler’s availability. Manpower allocation is the need of most Police Departments. Scenturion K9 will come to your city and close by your city during your handlers assigned work hours. It is not practical to expect a canine to benefit from a continuous ten hour training day. It is fatiguing and self defeating for both the dog and the handler. Subsequently, the training will only be between 3-4 hours a day, during assigned duty hours, eliminating overtime or scheduled training time away from the Department. On occasion, there will be times of special need for solving night problems and or odor distractions where at times it will become necessary to flex time and hours. The Basic class will need to be a minimum of 100 hours covered over a 4-6 week period. The time frame will need to be flexible, based on the handler’s skill and trainability as well as the K9’s drive and abilities.

The training will include but not be limited to:

Instruction and maintenance of basic/advanced techniques for detection dog handling.

Instruction and review of case law, legal updates and current cases when applicable.

Written tests on case law, narcotics, and training techniques.

Instruction and maintenance in basic obedience.

Advanced Handler Services

Problems and concerns are more readily identified and addressed when trainer and teams meet on a regular two week basis. The training will consist of 8-10 hours per month, in a minimum of two sessions, at various sites in and around your city. The prospective days will be selected by mutual agreement between you and me. The first meeting in the month will include case law, classroom instruction and addressing any training problems, concerns and behavior issues, in addition to situation and scenario training. The situation and scenario training will focus on teaching and repetition training. The second session of the month will be based on evaluating the team in different scenarios, with different scenarios containing all four narcotics, derivatives and paraphernalia and various amounts. There will be a minimum of eight searches that will vary in search length up to an exceeding the established threshold for each team. I will complete a written evaluation for the team upon completion of the training.

The training will include but not be limited to:

Instruction and maintenance of basic/advanced techniques for detection dog handling.

      Monthly team performance testing.

Written tests on case law, narcotics, and training techniques.

Instruction and review of case law, legal updates and current cases when applicable.

Instruction and maintenance in basic obedience.

Review of daily and weekly training logs (only if requested)

Sincerely,
